European Roulette Rules
The rules for European roulette are slightly different simply because the roulette wheel only has a single zero. Also, the European version has the “en prison” rule that adds an extra dimension to the game. This means that if the player should make a bet on anything even money, i.e. black, red, odd, even, 19-36 or 1-18 that they will either get half their money back or be in person should the ball land on zero. On the next spin, if one of the imprisoned bets is a winner then the bet is released to the player although the winnings are not. Another rule that is similar is the “La Partage” rule. This rule offers the player half of their bet back, but there is not the option of going to prison.
Rules for Single Zero Roulette
The majority of casinos in the United States that are upscale and for high rollers are more likely to have roulette wheels with single zeros, rather than double zeros. Those playing roulette on single zero wheels should understand that the limits are usually much higher and the house edge is 1/37, which works out to 2.70%.
Roulette Rules in Atlantic City
There is an interesting payout for even money bets in Atlantic City. These are bets on black, red, even, odd, 1-18, and 19-36. These bets are based on the European “en prisone” rule that states that if the ball lands on the 0 or on the 00 then they lose only half their bet. This makes the house edge lower at 2.63%. This rule only applies on 00 wheels.
